Abstract:

Research, development, and deployment of AI systems raise a variety of ethics questions. These ethics questions include risks, where AI systems pose ethical risks, and opportunities, where AI systems could resolve existing ethical problems. Effectively dealing with these ethics questions requires integrating ethics systematically into the whole innovation process, encompassing the research, development, design, deployment, and updating of AI systems. Industry, academia, and governmental agencies are all currently experimenting with different models to achieve this integration. These efforts often fall back to the traditional ethics and compliance model, as practiced in research ethics. In this talk, I show the shortcomings of using the ethics and compliance model for this purpose and introduce the PiE (puzzle-solving in ethics) model.
