July 25 - 29, 2016

Louisiana State University, Digital Media Center

****Registration Closed**--email kjones@lsu.edu if you want to be notified next year when registration opens.**

Big data is taking over business, marketing, and is becoming essential in science, since real science is increasingly being done in a computer lab rather than in a traditional lab. Students will explore large scientific databases and find interesting facts about galaxies, proteins, fish, weather, and more. This camp will provide students with a project-based introduction to coding and computer technology in an informal and fun environment. Engaging talks by LSU faculty will be included. Students will learn from the experts how to deal with huge amounts of data and be "scientists for a day". Using real databases, they will learn how fast the universe is expanding, how much global temperature increased in the last 50 years, and how to search large chemical databases to find potentially useful new drugs, among other activities. The goal of the program is to promote interests in STEM careers among children.

WHO:  Rising 9th, 10th and 11th graders who are interested in science and computer technology are eligible for the program. No previous experience with computing is required. Students accepted for the camp will be notified in early summer.

REGISTRATION:  $125/person.  Supplies, lunches and snacks are provided during the camp. Participants are responsible for arranging their own transportation to and from LSU's campus.
