Registration is Closed -- Sessions are FULL!
The LSU Center for Computation & Technology (CCT) will offer special instruction in computational mathematics to middle school students (Grades 7 and 8).
This program highlights the strong connections between mathematics and programming. It will provide students with a project-based introduction to coding and computer technology in an informal and engaging environment. The activities will reinforce the mathematics children already know by presenting them in the context of computing.
Participants will:
- Be introduced to state of the art functional programming.
- Solve mathematical problems by implementing them in a computer.
- Practice how to communicate mathematical ideas in a precise language.
- Learn how to use software for doing algebra and geometry on a computer.
- Teach mathematics to computers that "forgot" them.
The goal of the program is to promote interests in STEM careers among young children. Engaging talks by faculty affiliated with the LSU Center for Computation & Technology (CCT) will be included every Saturday.
WHO: Any middle school student in grades 7 and 8 who is interested in math and computer technology is eligible for the program. No previous experience with computing is required. Transportation to and from the LSU campus will be the responsibility of parents/guardians or the student’s school.
REGISTRATION: $25 registration fee. All materials (including computers) and lunch will be provided. Participants can attend as many of the four Saturday's as they wish for the one-time fee. Note: Cancellations received and post-marked prior to September 28, 2014, will receive a full refund. After September 28, no refunds will be issued. Substitutions will be permitted! Registration Closed -- Sessions are Full!
SCHEDULE: All sessions are 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. (Each session is different, ideally students should plan to attend all four sessions but this is not mandatory).
