BATON ROUGE - Red Stick International Animation Festival will get the holiday season off to an animated start this Sunday, Dec. 6 with a free animation screening at the Manship Theatre in the Shaw Center for the Arts downtown, sponsored by the office of the French Consulate General in New Orleans.

The Red Stick Réveillon is based on traditional French Réveillon de Nöel Christmas celebrations, and will feature original, family friendly animated films from France. All films are either without dialogue, or are subtitled in English. Red Stick, the largest animation festival in the United States, highlights animated works from a different country each year. For the 2009 festival, which took place April 22-25, 2009 in downtown Baton Rouge, France was the spotlight country.

“We wanted to host a holiday event to showcase the ongoing partnership between Red Stick and France, and to give people in Baton Rouge a special taste of French culture during the holidays to celebrate our continued partnership and friendship with the people of France,” said Red Stick International Animation Festival Director Stacey Simmons, Ph.D.

The event, which is free and open to the public, begins at 2:30 p.m. In addition to watching the French animated films, guests will enjoy a traditional French holiday dessert, a bûche de nöel (yule log cake.) And, Pére Nöel, or Santa Claus, as Americans know him, will make a special appearance. Teddy Smith Studios will be available to take photos of children with Pére Nöel.

There will be a special drawing for some gifts in Santa’s Bag, so families should arrive early!  Seating is limited, and guests are welcome to attend the Red Stick Réveillon on a first-come, first-served basis.  Admission is free, but photos are available for purchase from Teddy Smith Studios.

Prior to the screenings, Simmons and other representatives of the Red Stick International Animation Festival will make a major announcement about plans for the 2010 festival.

LSU’s Center for Computation & Technology sponsors Red Stick International Animation Festival in partnership with the Baton Rouge Area Chamber, Baton Rouge Area Foundation, East Baton Rouge Parish Mayor-President’s Office, Louisiana Department of Culture, Recreation and Tourism and Louisiana Economic Development.
