Baton Rouge – Red Stick International Animation Festival, the largest event of its kind in the United States, has received a record number of entries for its fifth annual “Best of the Fest” competition, with more countries than ever before participating.
The festival received 411 films from 45 countries for this annual event that highlights the intersections among art, technology and computational science. Since the first festival in 2005, Red Stick typically received between 200 and 250 films for the animation competition, with participants from nearly 30 countries submitting original, animated work. The numbers for the 2009 submissions, which the festival accepted from Sept. 1, 2008 through Jan. 2, 2009, surpass all previous records.
“Each year, the Red Stick festival draws renowned animators, video game developers and digital artists to Baton Rouge, and our film competition participation keeps increasing,” said Red Stick International Animation Festival Director Stacey Simmons. “We are thrilled to have many more films included for 2009, and we hope their work will inspire other students, artists and animators around the world to become part of this event.”
Participants were able to submit work in eight categories:
• Animated Short Film (student and professional)
• Music Video
• Scientific Visualization
• Animation for Commercials
• Animation for Games
• Animation for Young Audiences
• Experimental Animation/Visual Music (student and professional)
• Storyboard Competition
Red Stick will consider all films for the 2009 Best of the Fest awards, which will be announced and presented during the festival, April 22-25 in downtown Baton Rouge’s Arts District. Festival-goers can see the films as part of the free screenings Red Stick presents each year.
The Red Stick festival is sponsored by LSU in partnership with the Baton Rouge Area Chamber, Baton Rouge Area Foundation, East Baton Rouge Parish Mayor-President’s Office, Louisiana Department of Culture, Recreation and Tourism, Louisiana Economic Development and Baton Rouge Area Digital Industries Consortium.
