RENO, Nev. – August 22, 2007 -- Neil Gershenfeld, one of the most innovative scientists in the United States, will be the keynote speaker at the SC07 conference Nov. 10-16 in Reno, Nev.
Co-founder and director of MIT's famed Center for Bits and Atoms, Prof. Gershenfeld's work on merging the physical world of atoms with the digital world of bits has ranged from developing molecular quantum computers to virtuosic musical instruments to programmable personal fabricators that will allow anyone to make almost anything.
SC07, which showcases advances in high-performance computing, networking storage and analysis, always begins with a Technical Program that features a keynote address by a dynamic, nationally known speaker to set the tone for the conference. Gershenfeld's Center is breaking down the boundaries between computer science and physical science, helping advance not just the performance but also the relevance of the frontiers of computing to some of today's greatest challenges and opportunities. Prior to leading CBA, he ran the ÒThings That ThinkÓ industrial consortium that pioneered moving computation out of conventional computers and into the world around us.
Technology from his laboratory has been seen and used around the world, from New York's Museum of Modern Art to the White House to rural Indian villages. Gershenfeld has written numerous technical publications, patents, and books including Fab, When Things Start To Think, The Nature of Mathematical Modeling and The Physics of Information Technology. His research has been featured in The New York Times, The Economist, and the McNeil/Lehrer News Hour. He was selected as a CNN/Time/Fortune Principal Voice and as one of the top 100 public intellectuals.
Gershenfeld has a Bachelor of Arts degree in physics with high honors and an honorary
Doctorate of Science from Swarthmore College. He earned his Ph.D. from Cornell
University and was a Junior Fellow of the Harvard University Society of
Fellows. Gershenfeld also was a member of the research staff at Bell Labs.
