Louisiana Tech University's research computer network and Internet connection bandwidth reached warp speed last week.
Tech connected its "Bluedawg" supercomputer to the Louisiana Optical Network Initiative, a statewide fiber-optic grid, and also moved Internet traffic to LONI.
The 30 megabits of Internet bandwidth that was previously overloaded by mid-day jumped to around 100 megabits, said Tech vice president for Research and Development Les Guice, who also serves as LONI Management Committee chairman.
"Five years ago, Louisiana wasn't even on the radar in high-performance computing," Guice said. "All of the sudden, we have the most powerful and robust network of any in the country."
