Center for Computation & Technology Hosts LSU Alum for Frontiers of Scientific Computing Lecture
CCT will feature Tinsley Oden, Ph.D., director of the Institute for Computational Engineering and Sciences at University of Texas, in a guest lecture. Oden, who is a Louisiana native and received his undergraduate degree in civil engineering from LSU, will be CCT's first “Frontiers of Scientific Computing” lecture for the Fall 2007 semester. He will lecture at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 12, in room A101 in the Life Sciences Building Annex. In his guest lecture, Oden will discuss “Adaptive Multiscale Modeling Of Large-Scale Molecular Systems,” which is one of his research specialty areas and involves looking at methods to correct modeling and computational errors so researchers can produce more accurate results. This particular lecture will focus on reducing modeling errors when looking at molecular science problems. Oden is a member of several international scientific organizations, including the U.S. National Academy of Engineering, and has published extensively in numerous science and engineering-related journals. Oden received a Presidential Citation for his work at University of Texas. CCT will host a reception at 4 p.m. following Oden's lecture.

Upcoming Lectures:
· The next all CCT meeting will be Sept. 19 at 3 p.m. in Johnston 338. Important: Pete Kelleher from the Office of Intellectual Property will be speaking at the meeting on what faculty need to know about research copyrights. Faculty should make every effort to attend.

· Tinsley Oden, Associate Vice President for Research and Director of the Institute for Computational Engineering and Sciences (ICES) at The University of Texas at Austin, will give a lecture on “Adaptive Multiscale Modeling Of Large-Scale Molecular Systems” at CCT on Wednesday, Sept. 12 at 4 p.m. in the Life Sciences Annex Building.

· The CCT Colloquium this week will feature Philip Maechling from the University of Southern California, who will discuss the Southern California Earthquake Center's program of seismic hazard research. The lecture will be Sept. 14 at 2 p.m. in Johnston 338.

· Poojitha Yapa, an engineering professor at Clarkson University, will give a lecture on “Modeling Oil and Gas Discharges from Deepwater Blowouts" at CCT as part of the IGERT on Computational Fluid Dynamics. Yapa's lecture is Monday, Sept. 17 at 3 p.m. in Johnston 338.

· Important: The CCT Colloquium Series has returned and will take place each Friday at 2 p.m. in Johnston 338. Last year, these lectures took place at 3 p.m., but the time has changed to accommodate other meetings. Shantenu Jha is in charge of the speaker line-up.
