Virtual Worlds Research Group to Hold First Meeting Thursday, Oct. 23
The LSU Virtual Worlds Research Group will have its first meeting for any faculty, staff and student researchers interested in using virtual environments in their curricula and/or research this Thursday, Oct. 23 at 1:30 p.m., in the CCT Training Room, Johnston 338.
The Virtual Worlds Research Group will hold monthly meetings to collaborate on and discuss research projects. The group will test various scenarios, including hosting classes and holding office hours using these networks, creating methods for students to display original work in a virtual environment and simultaneously hosting lectures, concerts and other events in real time and in virtual worlds. The group also is exploring how virtual worlds can be used to better understand the complex world of high performance computing, supercomputers and high-speed networks. Participants from any discipline are encouraged to join.
Stephen David Beck, LSU School of Music Professor and CCT interim director, is leading this group. The Virtual Worlds Research Group will work closely with AVATAR, a campus-wide multidisciplinary hiring initiative that establishes a faculty focus on the intersections among art, technology and computation, creating new research areas in virtual environments, digital art, electro-acoustic music, animation, video game design, scientific visualization and more. Beck is part of the group leading the AVATAR initiative.
