Registration Open for 2007 Red Stick International Animation Festival Registration is now open for the 2007 Red Stick International Animation Festival, which will take place April 18-22 in downtown Baton Rouge. Special discounts are available for students, teachers and staff members of colleges, high schools and other educational institutions. Red Stick International Animation Festival is an annual event that brings together artists, animators, filmmakers, computer scientists and also people who just like cartoons to showcase the latest developments in Louisiana's digital arts and technology sectors, which is leading to economic development for the state and the city. The festival will take place at a variety of venues in the capital city. This year's festival offers many exciting events, including screenings of new and classic animation, workshops for aspiring animators and lectures from those in the industry. So far, the festival has received 236 film submissions from 30 countries. Festival-goers can log onto Red Stick Web site, www.redstickfestival.org, and register for either the Red Pass or Gold Pass to attend the events. A Red Pass is no-cost to participants and entitles them to attend all festival film screenings. A Gold Pass entitles participants to attend all lectures offered at the 2007 Red Stick Festival, in addition to the free screenings. Gold Passes are $50. However, Gold Passes will be available to any faculty or staff from an educational institution for $25, and will be available to any students for $20. If someone purchases five or more student Gold Passes, the rate will be further reduced to $10 per student pass. In addition to lectures and screenings, participants can attend the workshops offered this year for $20 each, with a $10 each discount rate for students. Attendants must register for a Gold Pass before they can purchase admission to the workshops. Red Pass participants will not be eligible to attend the workshops. A schedule of events, workshops and speakers will be available on the Red Stick site. These listings are updated frequently, so participants are urged to check the site often. For more information, please contact the Red Stick International Animation Festival office at (225) 578-8903 or rsiaf@cct.lsu.edu. Pats on the Back
• Emrah Ceyhan had a paper, "Toward a Faster and Improved ADCIRC (ADvanced Multi-Dimensional CIRCulation) Model," accepted for publication in the Journal of Coastal Research. • Marc Noel, CCT undergraduate research student, received a job offer from Microsoft Corporation, based in Seattle. He also will be recognized twice at the Chopin Honors Convocation, for participation in the Upper Division Honors program and for outstanding undergraduate research. That award will recognize the research he has performed on "A Distributed Computing System with Condor and Cooperative Linux.” Noel has been working with CCT Professor Tevfik Kosar to deploy a campus-wide distributed system (Campus Grid) using the existing idle computational resources at LSU. This system, once completed, will provide a computational power of around 2000 processors for free, in addition to the already existing supercomputing resources at the campus. • National Lambda Rail plans to feature Thomas Sterling's “High Performance Computing: Concepts, Methods and Means” course at its booth during Innovate 2007 in May. Upcoming Guest Lectures: • Luciano Rezzolla, Max-Planck Institute for Gravitational Physics – Albert Einstein Institute, will discuss “Modeling Sources of Gravitational Waves, From the Birth of a Black Hole to the Merger of Binary Systems” on Thursday, March 8 at 3 p.m. in Johnston 338. • The CCT Colloquium Series will next feature Isiah M.
