Andreas Deja to Receive Inaugural Lifetime Career Achievement Award at Red Stick 2008
This year, the Red Stick International Animation Festival is adding a Lifetime Career Achievement Award to its events, and the inaugural recipient is renowned Disney feature animator Andreas Deja.
Deja did early work on “Black Cauldron” and “The Great Mouse Detective” before exploding onto the scene as a supervising animator in the landmark film “Who Framed Roger Rabbit?” He has created some of the most memorable characters in Disney animation, including King Triton in “Little Mermaid,” Gaston in “Beauty and the Beast,” Lilo of “Lilo and Stitch,” Scar from “Lion King” and Jafar from “Aladdin.”
Deja also is one of Disney’s few “keepers of Mickey,” the animators entrusted to sketch Disney’s marquee character, Mickey Mouse. Dr. Stuart Sumida, a paleo-biologist who specializes in animating animal movement and is a frequent Red Stick speaker, nominated Deja for the award.
Deja will give a lecture during Red Stick, which takes place April 16-19 in downtown Baton Rouge’s Arts District, outlining his career in animation. Deja’s lecture will take place on Friday, April 18, at 11:30 a.m.
