Ed Seidel Named to National Board of Trustees for Internet 2

Ed Seidel, CCT director, is the new discipline research representative for the Internet 2 Board of Trustees.

Internet 2 is a nationwide high-speed network that connects business, government and academic sites, enabling faster collaboration at greater speeds than traditional networking allows. LSU is connected to Internet 2 through the Louisiana Optical Network Initiative, or LONI. Seidel is chief scientist for LONI.

In his role as discipline research representative, Seidel will advise the national board on strategic directions for the academic partners of Internet 2.

Internet 2 site members elected the Board of Trustees, which represents leaders from academia, research and industry. The board provides strategic guidance, directs the setting of priorities and ensures that Internet2 continues to meet the needs of the research and education community it serves.

•    The University has awarded a new MHI proposal, AVATAR: Arts, Visualization, Advanced Technologies and Research. CCT professors Stephen David Beck and Stacey Simmons developed AVATAR, which will establish a research and creative focus on the intersections among the arts, technology and computational sciences.

Entertainment area boundaries OK’d

Recommended approval of a $100,000 city-parish appropriation to help sponsor the fourth annual Red Stick International Animation Festival. Mayor-President Kip Holden’s chief administrative officer, Walter Monsour, said this year’s event is expected to attract some 6,000 attendees with an estimated overall economic impact of $4.5 million.

•    Digital Media Speaker Series: Allison Clark, University Of Illinois Urbana Champaign, will give a lecture titled “The Katrina Summit: My Reflections On The Creation Of A Social Network In The Service Of Social Transformation” on Wednesday, March 26 at 10 a.m. at the Manship School of Mass Communication Holliday Forum in the Journalism Building.

•    Special Guest Lecture: Philip Holt, EA Tiburon VP and Studio General Manager, will deliver a lecture titled “Living With Madden: The Drive For Consistent Excellence” Wednesday, March 26, 2008 at 1 p.m. in Johnston 338.

•    Colloquium: Rudolf Eigenmann, Purdue University, will speak on the topic, “High Performance Computing Going Mainstream,” Friday, March 28, 2008 11:30 a.m. in Johnston 338.

•    IMPORTANT: Anyone organizing a lecture OR EVENT should first check with Karen  Jones for available dates to avoid having multiple lectures/events on the same day. Also, coordinate with your Focus Area lead so that CCT can get the best attendance possible.  There may be open slots in a standard lecture series that needs to be filled.

•    The ALL CCT Meeting for March 26 has been cancelled.

•    ALL CCT Meetings for the spring are scheduled as follows: April 23, May 21, June 18 and July 16.  All meetings are held at 3 p.m. in 338 Johnston Hall.  Faculty, staff and students are encouraged to attend.

•    The Red Stick International Animation Festival will take place from April 16-19 in downtown Baton Rouge. If you would like to volunteer for the festival, please contact Red Stick Volunteer Manager Travis Williams at twilliams@cct.lsu.edu.
