CCT Hosts SC09 Workshop on Parallel Programming and Cluster Computing
CCT has partnered with the Supercomputing Conference’s 2009 education program to host a summer workshop at the University this week.
The SC 09 education program instructors host such workshops at various campuses around the country every year in advance of the annual Supercomputing Conference, which will take place this year Nov. 14-20 in Portland, Oregon. The workshops are an essential part of the Supercomputing Conference’s national efforts supporting faculty integration of parallelism and computational science into undergraduate curricula across the disciplines.
In these summer workshops, SC instructors teach undergraduate faculty, K-12 instructors, and graduate or undergraduate students about various areas of supercomputing and cyberinfrastructure, and give them ideas for including this technology in their curricula and education programs.
The workshop at CCT introduces undergraduate faculty to parallel programming & cluster computing. The workshop instructors will focus mostly on distributed parallelism (MPI), and will also discuss shared memory parallelism (OpenMP), instruction level parallelism, Graphics Processing Unit parallelism and hybrid shared/distributed parallelism. Depending on their interest, participants can learn about developing, debugging, profiling and tuning parallel applications across a variety of computing architectures, using tools from a variety of sources, including GNU, Intel, TotalView, and the Bootable Cluster CD.
Thirty participants from various colleges and universities have traveled to LSU to attend the workshop, which will take place through Saturday, July 11. Kathy Traxler and Karen Jones wrote the proposal that was accepted to have this workshop conducted through CCT.
This is the second year CCT has hosted an SC summer workshop. The SC 08 education program hosted an “Integrating Computational Science Into the Undergraduate Curriculum” at LSU June 8-14, 2008.

• Call for Student Participation in Cluster 2009: The conference has received an award from the National Science Foundation to support student participation by covering advance student registration fees and providing $200 per student toward lodging for up to 75 students. Students will be selected generally on a first-come, first-served basis, with some preference given for student authors of papers or posters. Students who wish to participate in Cluster 2009 can seek approval for this support by sending a single email to d.katz@ieee.org, with the subject "Cluster 2009 Student Support," and provide contact information and information about any authorship of material being submitted to the conference. Students also must attach a letter from their advisor/professor explaining how this program will advance the student's career.
