Red Stick Receives Record-Breaking Participation for 2009 Competition
Red Stick International Animation Festival has received a record number of entries for its fifth annual “Best of the Fest” competition, with more countries than ever before participating.
The festival received 403 films from 45 countries for this annual event that highlights the intersections among art, technology and computational science. Since the first festival in 2005, Red Stick typically received between 200 and 250 films for the animation competition, with participants from nearly 30 countries submitting original, animated work. The numbers for the 2009 submissions, which the festival accepted from Sept. 1, 2008 through Jan. 2, 2009, surpass all previous records.
“Each year, the Red Stick festival draws renowned animators, video game developers and digital artists to Baton Rouge, and our film competition participation keeps increasing,” said Red Stick International Animation Festival Director Stacey Simmons. “We are thrilled to have many more films included for 2009, and we hope their work will inspire other students, artists and animators around the world to become part of this event.”
Participants were able to submit work in eight categories:
• Animated Short Film (student and professional)
• Music Video
• Scientific Visualization
• Animation for Commercials
• Animation for Games
• Animation for Young Audiences
• Experimental Animation/Visual Music (student and professional)
• Storyboard Competition
Red Stick will consider all films for the 2009 Best of the Fest awards, which will be announced and presented during the festival, April 22-25 in downtown Baton Rouge’s Arts District. Festival-goers can see the films as part of the free screenings Red Stick presents each year.
The Red Stick festival is sponsored by LSU in partnership with the Baton Rouge Area Chamber, Baton Rouge Area Foundation, East Baton Rouge Parish Mayor-President’s Office, Louisiana Department of Culture, Recreation and Tourism, Louisiana Economic Development and Baton Rouge Area Digital Industries Consortium.

• Linda Petzold from the University of California Santa Barbara will be speaking as a part of the IT Eminent Lecture Series on “Multiscale Simulation of Biochemical Systems.” The lecture will take place Friday, Jan. 23 at 2:30 p.m. in 145 Coates Hall. There will be a reception following the lecture at 3:30 p.m.

• The Spring 2009 semester commences Monday, Jan. 12. Please be aware of your student workers’ schedules and work hours for the coming semester.
• The first ALL CCT meeting of the Spring 2009 semester will take place next Wednesday, Jan. 14, at 3 p.m. in Johnston 338. • The CCT Faculty Research Retreat originally scheduled in New Orleans on Jan. 8 and 9 has been canceled. The retreat will be rescheduled on campus. Details will follow.

• CCT will host Computational Science Poster Day, an initiative of faculty working on the CyberTools project, on April 17. This event is open to all undergraduate students in the state. Please encourage your students to submit ideas for a poster as they return to campus for the new semester! Poster abstracts are due Thursday, Feb. 12. • CCT is partnering with Louisiana Biomedical Research Network to host the second Computational Biology Workshop. The event will take place Feb. 6 and 7 at LSU. This workshop brings together researchers who are using computational approaches in the biological sciences, HPC providers and cyberinfrastructure developers to forge a community of computational biologists across the state. • CCT has been notified of a new requirement concerning all foundation reimbursement requests. In advance of any event that will require foundation reimbursement, such as but not limited to visitor meals over the state per-diem rate or meals/events that include alcoholic beverages, we must submit a prior-approval/advance request for the reimbursements. This request must be submitted for review before the planned expenditure is incurred. Additionally, the request must include (1) a statement indicating the specific program that will benefit from the expenditure and (2) how the program and benefit fit into the Center's strategic plan. While we apologize for the additional layer of paperwork related to foundation reimbursements, it is essential that we beginning following this new requirement. Active and future foundation reimbursement requests will not be approved and reimbursed unless the additional documentation has been provided. Karen Jones, Theresa Markey, and/or Joel Williams are available to explain how their information needs to be submitted and to help as needed.
