LSU, Tulane Faculty Partner to Host “Scientific Computing Around Louisiana”
CCT, and Tulane University’s Center for Computational Science will co-sponsor Scientific Computing Around Louisiana, or SCALA, on the LSU campus Feb. 5 and 6.
SCALA is an inaugural meeting to highlight cutting-edge topics in scientific computing, showcase research in this area that is taking place in Louisiana, and to promote collaborations across the state.
Susanne C. Brenner, CCT and LSU Department of Mathematics, and Lisa J. Fauci of Tulane University are organizing this meeting, which they hope will become an annual event.
SCALA will feature invited presenters, talks and contributed posters. The meeting will begin at 1 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 5, and run through late afternoon on Saturday, Feb. 6.
More than 70 faculty, postdoctoral researchers and students from colleges and universities in and around Louisiana will attend the inaugural SCALA meeting.

Pats on the Back:
• Honggao Liu received an award from the National Science Foundation through the University of Chicago titled "TeraGrid Extension: Bridging to XD.” The award is $1,141,200, for one year.
• Gabrielle Allen received a year and a half extension of $179,355 to continue her work on the Blue Waters project. Blue Waters is an initiative led through the National Center for Supercomputing Applications at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. LSU, through CCT, is part of the Great Lakes Consortium for Petascale Computing, which is working to deploy Blue Waters in early 2011 as the first dedicated petascale-class supercomputer for academic research.

Please Note:
• Today is the final date for early bird registration to attend the 17th annual Mardi Gras Conference on Computational Materials and Methods Feb. 11-14, 2010, at LSU’s Lod Cook Alumni Center. This conference brings together researchers working in this broad area to promote the cross-fertilization of ideas, foster information exchange, enable community building and expose graduate students and postdocs to the newest methods and advances. The conference will feature tutorial presentations, posters, in-depth discussions, and demonstrations in addition to several invited speakers. As always, the conference includes a Saturday afternoon trip to New Orleans for one of the city's largest Mardi Gras parades, Endymion. The registration fee is $400 through today, and will be $450 thereafter. Participants can register at http://www.mardigrasconference.org.
