CCT to Host 16th Annual Mardi Gras Conference on Virtual Worlds Feb. 19-21
The CCT will host the Mardi Gras Conference on “Virtual Worlds: New Realms for Culture, Creativity, Commerce, Computation and Communication” next week in downtown Baton Rouge.
This conference marks the first occasion where people using virtual environments such as Second Life, MultiVerse and Croquet to advance both business and academia will come together to discuss the latest developments in this emerging field.
The conference will take place Feb. 19-21 at the Sheraton Baton Rouge Hotel and Conference Center in downtown Baton Rouge. The conference includes two-and-a-half days of workshops, keynote speakers and seven discussion panels on various topics related to virtual worlds. Registration fee is $280; $180 for students.
Participants from around the world will attend the conference to present papers on topics including legal issues in virtual worlds, research methods for virtual worlds and avatar identity. Following the conference’s conclusion, participants will travel to New Orleans to see the Endymion Mardi Gras parade.

• Former CCT faculty member, Dr. Horst Beyer, recently had his book “Beyond Partial Differential Equations. On Linear and Quasi-linear Abstract Hyperbolic Evolution Equations” reviewed by Zentralblatt MATH. Zentralblatt MATH provides reviews and abstracts for articles in mathematics and is operated by Springer Science and Business Media. Beyer wrote this book during his time at CCT.

• Xin (Shane) Li has received an award from the Board of Regents titled "Solid Shape Parameterization for Efficient Finite Element Analysis and Scientific Simulations.” The proposal was for the Pilot Funding for New Research (Pfund) competition, and the award is for $10,000 over 12 months.
• Stacey Simmons, Ph.D., received a $10,000 award from the Louisiana Office of Tourism in support of the Red Stick International Animation Festival.
Upcoming Lectures:
• Alfred R. Fuller from the University of California, Davis, will lecture as part of the CCT Colloquium Series on Feb. 13 at 11:30 a.m. The lecture, “Interactive Visualization and Manipulation of OCT Acquired Volumetric In-Vivo Retinal Images,” will take place in 338 Johnston.
• Marsha Berger from the Courant Institute, will lecture as part of the Frontiers of Scientific Computing Lecture Series on Feb. 16 at 11 a.m. The lecture, “Computing Fluid Flows in Complex Geometry,” in 338 Johnston Hall.

• The next training seminar will be Wednesday, Feb. 11 from 10 a.m. to noon in Johnston 338. This training is to review multiple serial algorithms, and discuss the pros and cons of parallelizing the algorithm. • Abstracts for Computational Science Poster Day are due Thursday, Feb. 12! This activity is open to all undergraduate students in Louisiana. Computational Science Poster Day is an initiative of faculty working on CyberTools. There is no fee to submit work or attend the Computational Science Poster Day. Students who wish to participate should submit an abstract describing their research questions/purpose, methods and outcomes (actual or anticipated). The committee invites posters on all topics related to computational science, including cyberinfrastructure, computer architecture, supercomputing and its related tools and technologies, basic science applications, and more!
