“Tangible and Embedded Interaction†Conference This Week
The first International Conference on Tangible and Embedded Interaction is this week, from Thursday, Feb. 15- Saturday, Feb. 17 at the Sheraton Convention Center. On Saturday, the conference will conclude with a trip to New Orleans so participants can see the Krewe of Endymion parade.
This conference, an outgrowth of the CCT Mardi Gras Conference, will host contributions from all seven continents. Organizers of the conference received nearly 100 submissions from 20 countries, and accepted 50 of these -- talks, posters, interactive exhibits, and a performance – for presentation. Related disciplines include: computer science; electrical engineering; mechanical engineering; design; architecture; art; fashion; business; psychology; et al.
Example projects to be presented included instrumented furniture, board games, pillows, architectural windows, paper, wallpaper, shoes, hammocks, many new kinds of graspable physical objects, and even an art piece involving meat. A complete list of presentations, together with selected pictures, is online at http://tei-conf.org/program.html.
CCT is the lead sponsor for this conference. If you wish to participate in the conference, today is the deadline to register. Please do so through the TEI '07 link on the CCT Web site, or from the TEI '07 site directly.
Any CCT staff who are willing to volunteer during the event should contact CCT Event Manager Karen Jones at kjones@cct.lsu.edu

State Geeks Out with Computer Network
2-12-2007/Baton Rouge Business Report – Daily Report
Louisiana has secured a site on the Open Science Grid, a global consortium of universities and laboratories connected via the Internet. Through LSU and Louisiana Tech, the state's computing ability has skyrocketed, and its own researchers are participating in one of the most advanced and fastest-growing grid environments in the world. The concept is simple: by connecting with computer stations in Germany, Chicago or elsewhere, Louisiana can tap into the network and share its resources, meaning everything from computing power to actual research from other teams. For instance, Dick Greenwood, a physics professor at Louisiana Tech, is working on something dubbed ATLAS, a next-generation physics project based in Switzerland. As its title suggests, this is a lofty one. Scientists from all over the world are working together to conduct research on the fundamental nature of matter, with the goal of providing more insight into the creation of the universe.

Pats on the Back
• Tevfik Kosar was recently awarded an Economic Development Assistantships grant from the Louisiana Board of Regents through the LSU graduate school. The grant provides support for one graduate student at $100,000 throughout four years. Kosar's proposal was "Attracting Superior Students to Build Next Generation Cyber-Infrastructure for Coastal and Environmental Research†and aims to hire superior students who will perform research toward building a next-generation cyberinfrastructure. This project is designed to capitalize on Louisiana's recent investments in Louisiana Optical Network Initiative, National Lambda Rail and Vision 2020 projects to enable collaborative coastal and environmental research that will directly impact the economic development in Louisiana.
Upcoming Guest Lectures:
