Researchers, NVIDIA collaborate on petascale GPU computing
2-1-2008/HPC Wire
High-performance computing is entering a new era as researchers work to develop petascale systems that will enable researchers to solve a new class of complex problems, such as designing new materials from the atom up, predicting changes in the earth's climate and ecosystem, and simulating entire engineered systems like power plants and aircraft for better performance.

Pats On The Back:
• Congratulations to Daniel S. Katz, unanimously awarded the title of Adjunct Associate Professor in the ECE Department, for his contributions working with CCT.
• Elena Caraba was awarded a TAF scholarship by the Honors College to support her thesis research. Elena is working on her honors thesis titled "A preconditioned conjugate gradient algorithm for a weakly over-penalized interior penalty method" with Dr. Sue Brenner.
• Dr. Frank Muldoon’s paper “Control of a Simplified Unsteady Film-cooling Flow Using Gradient-based Optimization” has been accepted for publication in the Journal of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics. The paper can be found online at http://www.cct.lsu.edu/~fmuldoo/wall-jet-2d-version-5.pdf
Upcoming Lectures:
• There will not be a Colloquium lecture this Friday, Feb. 15. Instead, staff, faculty and students are asked to attend the David Keyes lectures on Monday, Feb. 18.
• David E. Keyes, Columbia University, will give a Frontiers of Scientific Computing lecture, “A Nonlinearly Implicit Manifesto,” Monday, February 18, 2008 at 10:40 a.m. in Johnston 338. There will be a reception before the lecture at 10:10 a.m. Keyes will deliver a second lecture, “Scalable Solver Infrastructure For Multirate, Multiscale PDE Applications” Monday afternoon at 1:40 p.m. in Johnston 338.
• IMPORTANT: Anyone organizing a lecture should first check with Karen Jones for available dates to avoid having multiple lectures on the same day. Also, coordinate with your Focus Area lead so that CCT can get the best attendance possible. There may be open slots in a standard lecture series that needs to be filled.
