University to Celebrate 150th Birthday at LSU Day Saturday, April 24
On Saturday, April 24, LSU will open its doors to the public for a free, fun-filled day of exploration and discovery marking LSU Day, a celebration of the University’s sesquicentennial anniversary.
Staged in the heart of the LSU campus, including the LSU Quadrangle and LSU Parade Ground, LSU Day events will highlight the university’s achievements in athletics, research, the arts, academics and community outreach, and will provide a sneak peek of what this world-class institution has to offer in future years. LSU Day exhibitions will be open from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m.
Alumni are invited to attend and reconnect with old friends and professors, while prospective students can make new friends and meet future professors. The public is invited to attend and simply enjoy the food and entertainment and learn more about LSU.
The LSU Center for Computation & Technology, or CCT, will host an LSU Day exhibition, “Visualize This!” in the visualization resources room in Middleton Library. At this exhibit, CCT will feature research videos that highlight different projects taking place through LSU’s cyberinfrastructure resources, and will display scientific visualization images produced through work at the CCT, including numerical relativity phenomena, hurricanes and computational fluid dynamics processes. Several students also will attend LSU Day to present their current research work to visitors.
In addition to “Visualize This!” CCT is providing a “Best of the Fest” reel from Red Stick International Animation Festival to show in Dodson Hall, which will be used to screen films from different areas of campus throughout the day. The Red Stick films will be screened at 1 p.m., and CCT Associate Director for Economic Development and Red Stick Festival Director Stacey Simmons will introduce “Best of the Fest” and discuss LSU’s efforts to advance animation and digital media.
As one of the acts on the main stage on the Parade Ground, local cover band Capital Gains will perform from 2:10 p.m. through 3:20 p.m. The band members are all LSU professors, including CCT's own Rudy Hirschheim, who also is a professor with the business college's Information Systems and Decision Sciences Department.
LSU Day is one of several signature activities taking place throughout 2010 as part of the university’s Sesquicentennial Celebration. Sesquicentennial-related events throughout the year are made possible thanks to generous donations to the University by the following sponsors: Campus Federal Credit Union, Baton Rouge Coca Cola Bottling Company, AT&T, Raising Cane’s, ExxonMobil, Entergy and Blue Cross/Blue Shield.

Pats on the Back:
• Rudy Hirschheim, CCT and Information Systems and Decision Sciences, has recently been ranked at the top of his research field in two international studies. A recent paper, written by Lin and Gregor, ranked the productivity of information systems researchers from around the world using the top six journals in the field. According to that metric, Hirschheim is ranked #3 worldwide. Another recent publication by Truex et. al. used the Hirsch family of indices to evaluate ‘researcher influence’, and ranked Hirschheim among the top 10 researchers in the world for this field. The Hirsch indices are a set of metrics which try to go beyond “number of publications” to determine researcher influence. Congratulations on this remarkable achievement!
• The Louisiana Board of Regents approved an amendment to the EPSCoR RII CyberTools grant to provide extra funds of $66,120 to support eight additional students as participants in Juana Moreno and Gabrielle Allen's REU 2010 summer program. This addition was an effort from Juana, Gab, Kathy Traxler and Bety Rodriguez-Milla. The $66,120 will be used to support more Louisiana students, particularly those from under-served populations, to attend the REU. The REU, which will take place May 31-July 30 at CCT, will now be supporting a total of 16 students this summer.
